The “Howl” Remix Contest

As another one of my crazy schemes to get the word out about this silly band, I offer up the first official IJG remix contest. Ever.

(Credit where it’s due: this was at least partly inspired by a similar contest conducted by Chris Schlarb back in 2006.)

The song I selected for the remix treatment is a “perennial favorite” (if such words even obtain in the land of Industrial Jazz) from our LEEF album: “Howl.” (If you have never heard it before, you can grab it from the ReverbNation player embedded there on your right.)

What we have here, first, is a breakout of every track that went into creating the Frankenstein version of the tune that actually ended up on the album. As explained in the album’s liner notes, said version was actually a combination of live Bimhuis tracks, plus a bit of studio sweetening (from a multi-tracked session that preceded the Bimhuis show). All of the tracks (except drums) are mono, and are taken from the mix that I made at home before lugging the entire session to engineer Nick Moon. Voila:

And just because I know (believe me, I know) how challenging it can be to mix that many tracks, and just because I know you may prefer to work with something more, uh, scaled down, I’m going to provide some simple stems as well:

So. What are the specifics of this contest?

Consider it this way: I’m not particularly interested in hearing another mix of “Howl” that attempts to present the tune for “what it is,” and leaves the compositional elements more or less intact. What I am interested in is a true remix, something that re-imagines (indeed, improvises upon) the tune — say, by filling it out with some new voices, or by slicing and dicing its roadmap, or by mashing it up with the latest Christina Aguilera hit. You probably know my aesthetic by now — the crazier, and the more creative, the better.

We (the Industrial Jazz Group) will be selecting a winner based on that set of (admittedly vague) criteria. Said winner will receive $50, and will be given the option (if he or she so chooses) of having their creation included as a bonus track on the next Industrial Jazz Group recording (due out in 2010). He or she will also get a copy of said recording.

Need a deadline? Okay. How about we say that all entries are due by 11:59 PM on December 31 of this year (2009)*** UPDATE! *** The deadline has been extended to 11:59 PM on January 31, 2010. You get a whole extra month! (Don’t you wish everyone was that flexible?)

It’s Friday, and that means time for another upload from the vaults:

This was our encore at the aforementioned Bimhuis show.

Though most of the band had played the tune before, we hadn’t rehearsed it with this particular personnel configuration. Can you tell?

Speaking of “this particular personnel configuration,” I was quite remiss in failing to remind you of who exactly played in the Bimhuis band. Let me fix that now: Dan Rosenboom, Phil Rodriguez, Andre Canniere (trumpets); Wolter Wierbos, James Hirschfeld (bone); Beth Schenck, Cory Wright, Evan Francis, Brian Walsh, Katharina Thomsen, Josh Sinton (saxes); Oliver Newell (bass); Dan Schnelle (drums); Jill Knapp (vocals, dancing); Durkin (composition, conducting).

Hang Ten Through Hell

I’ve never been much of a surfer, but I fell in love with the culture shortly after moving to LA in 1995. One of my favorite films of all time is Endless Summer.

Today’s lost IJG tune is not exactly a surf rock number, though it does draw on elements of that genre, as well as the under-appreciated stuff known as “exotica.” It was originally intended as part of a larger musical-theatrical concept that involved dead zombie rock-n-rollers aggressively protesting the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina by surfing through the sunken city of New Orleans (and then on to Washington, DC), wreaking vengeance on the responsible parties. Needless to say, that project never came to fruition.

This particular instance of the tune is basically a leftover from the Bimhuis performance that yielded the album LEEF. It is raw, unedited, and unmixed. I would like to officially revisit the tune someday, in order give it the attention it deserves. Ah, well: that probably won’t happen for a while. In the meantime, here ’tis:

Put Another Nickel In

As you may have heard, the Industrial Jazz Group is touring the east coast in October! Hoo-boy, we can hardly wait.

Of course, a journey like this (ten shows in as many days, all occurring many miles from our natural habitat) is hella-expensive. One might even say ridiculously, brain-crushingly expensive. Airfare, hotel lodging, musician fees, catering, pyrotechnics, personal trainers, wardrobe, masseuses, pet sitters, limousine service, extra TVs for the ones we plan to throw out of hotel windows, extra cars for the ones we plan to drive into hotel swimming pools — damn, it all adds up!

(Okay, so I was just kidding about the last few items, there, but still — damn, it all adds up!)

Consider: Airfare for 11 people, which will cost somewhere in the neighborhood of $3300. Artist fees for 15 people for 10 days, which should (ideally) be somewhere in the neighborhood of $15,000 at least. Transportation for the tour, which will cost somewhere in the neighborhood of $5000. Put it all together and pretty soon you’re talking about real money!

You may have heard scuttlebutt here and there about the impending collapse of the music business, and of the jazz music business in particular. And while those rumors may or may not be true (we think they’re not!), and while there may or may not be an entirely new economy of music on the rise (we think there is!), we are realistic enough to recognize that we’re never going to sell more records than, say, the Jonas Brothers. (I know, four years ago we were making this joke about Christina Aguilera. Hey — times change, but our humor is consistent!)

In any case, while we can keep this band going without ever being as big as the Jonas Brothers, we can’t keep it going without you. That statement has never been truer than now, as we’re about to launch the mother of all impossible independent tours. And so, in all seriousness and humility, we’re turning to you, dear IJG fans, to help us make the whole thing a little less, uh, painful, financially.

To wit: like many before us (and like ourselves in a simpler time), we have created a full-fledged fundraiser, where you can get stuff (some of it rather ridiculous, I know) and contribute on one of multiple levels, should you so desire.

All contributions are, of course, tax-deductible. And incidentally, if you find the listed gifts a little silly (can’t say we blame you if that’s the case), or if you find the listed amounts not to your liking, but you still want to contribute, that’s totally cool!
